Julia Górko – Volunteer, Poland

The experience of working for Safe n’ Happy Periods was one of the most valuable experiences in my life. However, the beginning was difficult. It was not only my first time volunteering abroad, but also the first time in India and in Asia. The time change, different climate and an extremely strong cultural shock. However, after meeting Sarika – the founder of Safe n’ Happy Periods – I overcame the fear and started to fully enjoy my stay and the work. She instantly gave me a feeling of calmness, because she was treating all of us volunteers like close friends from the very first day.

When it comes to the work itself, my duties included managing the Safe n’ Happy Periods social media channels, creating content to be published on the Safe n’ Happy Periods website and, together with other volunteers, helping with organising and delivering the workshops. What I enjoyed most about the work was the direct contact with the girls and women we worked with and the possibility of sharing our experiences concerning menstruation issues. I feel that I somehow contributed to the big change Sarika is trying to implement in the Indian society, but also that I have learned a lot myself.

One of the best memories I have from the time of working for Safe n’ Happy Periods was our workshop in Podar International School in Navi Mumbai. After the educational part we handed out the feedback sheets to all the girls who participated in our workshop. Me and my friend Maria were later collecting and analysing the data, doing statistics and most importantly, reading the comments the girls wrote. I remember that one of the girls left a comment at the bottom of her feedback sheet saying “I think you should educate every girl in the world about the period”. That was the moment I realised how valuable the work we were doing was and that it was bringing real results.

The whole stay in India and the work I did for Safe n’ Happy was an amazing adventure and a life changing experience. Thank you Sarika and all the wonderful people I met for this chance!
